This Tuscany Photography Workshop is not the usual cliche Tuscany. This Tuscany Photography Workshop is located in the diverse and dramatic landscape of northern Tuscany. Northern Tuscany has a more mountainous and therefore, a more varied landscape than the southern parts of Tuscany.

Our Tuscany photography workshop is hosted in the Garfagnana region of north-west Tuscany. Garfagnana lies in a more isolated region of Tuscany which keeps it tucked away from the hordes of tourists associated with many other parts of Tuscany.  This ensures that during your entire workshop, you are able to relax from the stresses and strains of everyday life, avoid the crazy driving and not worry about being ripped off in every shop and restaurant. The landscape of northern Tuscany blends rugged mountains with broad valleys where olive trees, vines and chestnut trees form a lush green blanket, contrasting with traditional terracotta roofs. This provides a diverse and idyllic scenery for our photography workshops and is beautiful in every season. This all lends itself to you having a memorable and truly inspiring photography holiday.

Our base for our Tuscany photography workshop is the stunning photogenic medieval town of Barga. The town sits proud of the Serchio valley and offers panoramic views in all directions while its medieval network of tight narrow streets, flanked by ancient architecture, presents photographers with no end of opportunities.

Oh, and the food! The Garfagnana region of Tuscany is famous for its food, both in variety and quality. Even Italians travel from all over Italy to spend time in Garfagnana because of its scenery, clean mountain air and its cuisine.

Martin has spent over 20 years visiting this area and has amassed thousands of photographs, many of which have been sold. He has an intimate knowledge of the area, its people and its culture and will be able to guide you through every step of this Tuscany photography workshop.

Regardless of your experience, you will learn and progress your photography techniques rapidly under the close guidance of Martin and Tom. They will be present throughout each day’s shooting and will work closely with you to ensure you get a collection of images that you will cherish for life.

A thoroughly enjoyable and informative workshop which I would have no hesitation in recommending. Martin was very knowledgeable and was happy to spend his time helping me develop as a photographer (no more fingers over the lens!). Aperture, exposure time, time-lapse and composition are now familiar friends. Martin knows the area really well and took us to some beautiful locations, from the mountains to characterful Tuscan villages. He also arranged accomodation in a lovely hotel situated right in the heart of Barga’s old town and the food! Delicious!

The workshop in Barga was a great experience. The photography training was thorough and I liked the fact some post-production lessons were offered. Barga was a lovely setting for the workshops to take place. I would recommend to friends and family considering this type of holiday.

What a wonderful week I had. It was so much more than just a photography workshop. Martin was there throughout the week to teach me so much about my photography and he also drove us around to all the nearby villages.

These villages all sit on top of hills in a magnificent landscape and there is absolutely no way I would have been able to get there on my own. When I phoned Martin, he told me that this was a region of Italy that was unspoilt and he was absolutely right. The Tuscan villages are all authentic and don’t look as if they have changed in 100 years. I got some brilliant images. Martin is also so knowledgeable about the area and about photography. He never stopped entertaining us with snippets of “useless information”. His Adobe lessons were a huge step forward for me and I feel more able to make the most of all my old and new photographs.

The accommodation was also brilliant and the owner was very very helpful.

    I would recommend to anyone.

Martin was very knowledgable and took his time explaining things during the workshops. I learned a lot and brought home some great memories from the trip-as well as some amazing photos! The area of Tuscany was beautiful and provided some incredible sunset shots. The booking and payment process was smooth and I found it easy to contact Martin throughout the run up to our workshop.

Wow, what can I say. This was a great week from start to finish. Martin was great, he took us to some amazing places, and shared some great skills for post production which helped loads when I got home with editing my hundreds of memorable photos. Also, lots of laughs along the way.

On returning home after the workshop, Martin has continued his helpfulness by making himself available for any post production questions.

If you’re considering booking this workshop, then stop thinking about it and just book, you won’t regret it. 5 stars given without any hesitation.

Myself and my son Matthew attended Martins workshop in April it was something special for both of us. I would be lying if I pretended to be any kind of photographer, Matt got a Nikon camera from me and his Mum a couple of years ago for his 21st so was at least familiar with it. I contacted Martin prior to going out and asked advice on what to get he was pragmatic enough to get me to try different models to see which fitted my hands then steered me towards a Sony within my 200 quid budget. Between us we had a tripod my brother had bought us knowing we were going on the trip.
So one complete newbie at 46 and a keen to learn 23 year old with good entry level equiptment.
The journey started with us all meeting up at the airport prior to departure and having a chat.I layed my stall out early doors-im not that tech savvy and would just like to take some pictures eat well and make as much of a dent in the Tuscan red wine lake as possible. Matt was keen to learn the computer side of things far more and had signed up to light room prior to coming out.

The accomodation we got was fantastic, right in the old town of Barga not a double room but a two bedroom fully equiped appartment. Fully self sufficient and of a really high standard.
The weather was mixed for the week but nothing a light fleece and waterproof shell could cope with.
Martin tailors the week to you, If you want to do your own thing and just wander off and snap away he just lets you do it but keeps in touch and lets you know when next to meet up. I chose to wander off in the mornings and just take snaps in and around Barga. Martin would set up in the fantastic cafe we ate breakfast in most days and take the others through light room and photo shop on the computer. He spent quite a bit of time with Matt getting him up to speed on the various techniques.

Each day was different, Martin knows the non touristy parts of the region very well and was able to park us up at locations and point us towards vantage points very few could.

The pace was as easy or full on as you wished. Martin took time with all of us myself,Matt, Irene a very experienced photographer honing her skills and Gordon an old hand embracing the more technical side of things.
Martins local knowledge extended to where to get the best coffee, red wine and fabulous food each night at dinner.
Myself and Matt sat in the appartment each night with a couple of drinks looking at each others photos from the day-this is where the magic happened. Matt took my photos from my cheap camera and worked wonders with them. It was rainy for a few days so some dramatic skys and georgous light reflections on the pavements were only a few clicks away with what he had learned in the morning. I was flabergasted at what he had learned so quickly and really enjoyed seeing me and Matt developing as the week went on.
At the very top of the appartment there is a roofed terrace giving 360 degree views over Barga out of the windows. Matt went out for a cigarette at one point and came running back in when the sun came out shouting at me to grab my camera and the tripod. We both dashed up the stairs to the roof terrace and blasted off as many pictures as we could with the spectacular light over the valley/snow on top of the mountain/big dramatic clouds and harsh shadows.
Each photo I view from the trip brings back fantastic memories, the sights, sounds and smells. The rainy cobbled street shot was me and Martin walking after dinner having a chin wag when he stopped and took the shot explaining what he was seeing. The Devils bridge photo was Matt blagging his way into an old Italian couples back terrace and him and Martin snapping away.
I had a great week with Matt and really enjoyed Martin,Irene and Gordons company. Ate well, drank well and was given very specialised access to hidden parts of Tuscany affording a rank amateur to take some great photos.
It has opened the world of photography to me, my first tentative steps were awkward but Martin steadies your feet and enables you to walk very quickly.
If you fancy a bespoke Tuscan photography holiday look no further. 5 star rating from both me and Matt.
Martin also has the scope to tie up with a cookery school just down the road-so if you other half fancies an Italian cooking holiday and you want a photography holiday!!!!
Guess what Im planning for next year?

I had gone with Martin in September 17 to Tuscany. The area was stunning , small Villages in the mountains, the views looking down the Valley also superb. We visited various destinations were we obtained great photos. The views over Barga at sunset and because of Martins knowledge of the area said it all. Barga itself a very photographic historic hilltop town. Keep your camera in hand !
Even the weather aided the enhancement of photographic opportunities. Sunshine and Traumatic skies and clouds over Barga.!! ( thunderstorms +++)!
Martin’s encouragement and supportive attitude contributed to the weeks experience.
On the day I had free I visited Luca. Amazing…. make sure of the transport links and times as links are not of the best.
The experience is a worth while photographic workshop.
